Gwinnett County Public Schools is one of five systems nationwide selected to compete as a finalist for the prestigious Broad Prize top award for urban school systems. As a finalist, Gwinnett is guaranteed to receive $250,000 in scholarship funds for 2010 graduates and is competing to receive $1 million in scholarships.
The award recognizes school systems for the greatest overall performance and improvement in student achievement, particularly for minority and low-income students. This award is yet another indicator of the dedication and excellence which continues to thrive within the Gwinnett County Public Schools, extending from the leadership of the board, superintendent and administration all the way through to the individual school teachers and school administrators.
The award winner will be announced in Washington D.C. on September 16th after teams of educators and educational researchers visit each of the five finalist districts over the next two months to evaluate and select the overall winning district. The other four school districts are in Houston, Fort Lauderdale, Long Beach and El Paso. The award originated in 2002 and has been previously presented to school districts in Texas, California, New York, Massachusetts and Virginia.
