Mill Creek Schools Are Back in Session!

school bus lotYesterday was the first day back to school for the Mill Creek Cluster and all of Gwinnett County Schools.  Did your kids survive?

Some years seem more significant than others.  Of course, the first day of kindergarden or 1st grade are huge.  The start of middle school (6th grade here) is also a big milestone. My son, Nick, is in 7th grade at Frank Osborne Middle School.  No special turning point for him this year.

It was the first day of high school for my daughter, McKenzie.  She’s playing softball at Mill Creek High and we’re so very proud of her. So, now we’re getting up at 530am!!  Awesome :)

We’ve got amazing schools here. Just thought I’d share.

What about you?  Any milestones this year for you?

Arcado Cub Scout Round-up, August 12th

Wolf Cubs in Virginia
Image via Wikipedia

Arcado Elementary School will be hosting a ‘Round-up’ on Thursday, August 12th, for boys interested in joining Cub Scouts.  The event will run from 7:00pm until 8:00pm.

Cub Scouting is a program for boys between 1st and 5th grade.  Pack 551, the Arcado Elementary School Pack, has wonderful opportunities for boys to learn, socialize and gain experiences that they might otherwise not be able to have.

From the Boy Scouts of America website:

Activities are used to achieve the aims of Scouting—citizenship training, character development, and personal fitness. Many of the activities happen right in the den and pack. The most important are the weekly den meetings and the monthly pack meetings. Apart from the fun and excitement of Cub Scout activities, the Cub Scout Promise, the Law of the Pack, and the Cub Scout sign, handshake, motto, and salute all teach good citizenship and contribute to a boy’s sense of belonging.

Adult volunteers are also needed.  Den Leaders and others to help directly and indirectly support Pack 551 and its Scouts can volunteer on Thursday.  Training is provided by BSA.

Scouting is a very worthwhile activity for boys and their families.  And Cub Scouting especially, is quite family friendly.  Events are offered that not only allow parents, but also siblings to participate.  Scouts can also earn credits to offset the costs associated with Scouting, including uniforms, trips and supplies.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Gwinnett Batting Cages

kids baseball teamI’ve been doing a lot of baseball and softball batting for the last month.  My son just decided at the ripe old age of 12 that he wants to play Mill Creek baseball this fall, so we’ve been practicing every single day to get ready for the tryout.  (btw, the tryout was yesterday and he did really great!).

Jack City is the only batting cage that’s really close to Hamilton Mill, but there are several others within a 10 minute drive.

I thought I’d give you a quick list here:

I also did a search on BattingCageFinder.com and that was pretty accurate (interesting niche business, huh?)

If you’ve found any others, please drop a comment here and let everyone know.

Internet Marketing For Hamilton Mill Businesses

hamilton mill business - Google SearchI did a quick google search for “hamilton mill business” today.  I wanted to see which local businesses come up in the search results.  Since I spend so much time working on internet marketing, I’d definitely want to support those businesses that are working at it also.  At this point, in 2010, everybody knows that having your business show up in search results is an important part of running a local business.  But, most people don’t know how to make it happen. By the way, if your local business is in the Hamilton Mill area, then any search phrase that includes those words should be important to you.

Granted, the original phrase I used might not be the best one, but it’s what I started with.  If you search for “Hamilton Mill Movie Theater” or “Hamilton Mill Golf Club” or whatever, you’d get totally different results of course.

As a side note, I was very happy to find that HamiltonMillDwellings.com came up second in these search results.  I wasn’t even looking for that but it’s a nice bonus :)

Congratulations to Children’s Dentistry at Hamilton Mill for being the only other local business that came up in the results “above the fold” (where you can still see them without scrolling).  It wasn’t there actual website that came up, it was a Yahoo local listing (yes, they come up on google too!).

Interestingly, a german company called Hettich America apparently signed a huge commercial lease in the area recently.  Those results came up as #1 and #3 for this search.

Let us know in the comments here about your local business.

Welcome Arcado’s new Principal, Penny Palmer-Young

For the last few years, Arcado Elementary School has had Joe Ahrens in the top post.  He has positioned Arcado Elementary School as one of the highest ranked in Gwinnett County.  Excellent school spirit, very high test scores and a sense of community have all been fostered under his leadership.

This year, Arcado will have a new top administrator, Penny Palmer-Young.  She is committed to continuing the performance excellence of the school.

She was born and raised here in Gwinnett County, and graduated from Brookwood High School (she can be forgiven…  ;^ ).  Ms. Young has also spent a few years working in other schools in the Parkview Cluster, including Knight Elementary.

As our kids enjoy their last weekend of “freedom” before school starts on Monday, join me in welcoming Ms. Young as Arcado Elementary School’s newest Principal.  We are all looking forward to many more years of Arcado being one of the top performing elementary schools in Gwinnett County under her leadership.

Gwinnett County Gives You $22,500 Toward Your New Home!

Construction industryHere’s an update that was just published by Gwinnett County regarding the Gwinnett Neighborhood Stabilization Program.  This is pretty big news if you fit the profile.

Gwinnett’s home buying program aims to stabilize neighborhoods.
The Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP) is a program of the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners that assists individuals and families in obtaining affordable housing in Gwinnett. Through this program, the County buys and renovates foreclosed homes in an effort to stabilize hard-hit neighborhoods, help provide affordable housing, and create jobs in the struggling housing and construction industries.

Chief Financial Officer Aaron Bovos said, “The County has already bought 60 homes, ranging from $75,000 to $200,000 and rehab work is underway. So far, we’ve sold 20 of them.” Some of the homes are new and have never been lived in. All have energy saving features, upgraded kitchens, and new flooring. The program is funded by HUD with additional funds from the Georgia Department of Community Affairs.

The program also offers up to $22,500 for eligible home buyers to purchase the rehabilitated homes. Eligible buyers under the program include first-time homebuyers, single parents, surviving spouses of military service persons, and anyone who works in the healthcare, education, or government sectors such as nurses, teachers, police officers, and firefighters. Buyers need a down payment of just one percent of the purchase price and will get a second mortgage that has no interest and no payments to help make the home affordable. As an additional benefit, each homebuyer will receive a two-year home warranty. Maximum income limits range from $60,250 to $113,000, depending on family size. For example, a family of four can have household income up to $86,150 to qualify. All homebuyers in the program must also qualify for a 30-year fixed rate mortgage.

For more information about the Neighborhood Stabilization Program, just call Diamond Dwellings at 678.279.4700.

Gwinnett Hospital Says No to Employees Who Smoke

chain smokerGwinnett Medical Center just announced that it will no longer hire new employees that smoke. This story has received a ton of press coverage since it was announced just yesterday. Existing employee/smokers will be grandfathered in under the old policy and those employees will be encouraged to quit and offered smoking cessation help, etc.

This seems kind of logical – doesn’t it?

There’s already a smoke-free policy in place for all facilities of Gwinnett Medical Center. So, I guess this is the natural progression toward being fully smoke-free. After all, smokers smell smokey – even if they are not smoking in your presence or on the job.

Don’t get me wrong, I actually love the smell of smoke.  I smoked for 15+ years until my wife and I quit on New Years Eve many years ago.  I can’t remember what year it was but it was in the late 90’s.

So, I’m not anti-smoking or anti-smokers.  Let’s be clear on that point.

But, it does just seem to make sense that this move would come from the hospital?  Duh!

At this point everyone in the whole world knows that smoking is incredibly bad for your health. How could it be any other way?(at the hospital).

What do you think?
